Born in Jamaica in 1805. Moved to England to work as a nurse. Nursed sick soldiers in the Crimean War, using hygienic nursing techniques. She had to fund her own travel and work after offers of help were rejected by the government. For many years she looked after sick soldiers, at times on the battlefield under cannon fire. She was later to be awarded medals for bravery by Britain, Turkey and France. She died in 1881 but not before completing a book about her life that became a best-seller at the time. A truly remarkable woman.
